Working with Parents and Carers

At St. John’s we recognise the importance of team working to achieve the best outcomes for our learners. We are committed to working in partnership with all stakeholders but most importantly we understand the value of close liaison with a learner’s parents and carers.

Your young person will be assigned a personal tutor who, together with their support workers, will get to know them - and you - and who will provide their daily pastoral support.

If your young person resides with us, they will be assigned a key worker who will work in their care setting and spend one to one time with them each week.

Both the personal tutor and the key worker will be your point of contact and will be available to discuss any concerns or issues you may be having and to celebrate successes.

Placement review meetings are held during the first term and then each year of a learner’s placement. Your views will be sought prior to these meetings and your contribution to this process is invaluable.

The senior management team are also available to speak or meet with you if you wish and the Chief Executive is always pleased to see parents and carers to gather their feedback and views. We have parent representatives on both the school & college governing bodies and termly parent consultation events are held. You can also make an appointment for a personal meeting by contacting the school or college reception.

We recognise that we can learn a lot from the parents and carers of our learners and your experiences can help to inform our onward planning as we seek to meet the future needs of the learning disabled community. In return we have a great deal of professional knowledge and expertise amongst our dedicated staff team and we are always happy to advise with any specific issues or concerns you may have.

Our philosophy is that we can achieve more for of young people with learning disabilities by working together – together we are stronger.
