Joe's St. John's Story by his mum, Roz

joes_story_imgWhen Joe first arrived at St John's he was only 8 years old.

In those days he was a lovely, but very anxious little boy. He needed constant support and structure. He had no certainties and was desperately trying to make sense of the frightening world around him. He opted out of things that he did not want to do, rather than try something new. New situations, even small changes in routine, could throw him into a state of confusion.

These days Joe is a delightful, friendly young man who is much more confident and relaxed. He is coping with a nasty kidney disorder, yet manages to stay positive, enthusiastic and cheerful. We love him dearly and are so proud of him.

We have nothing but the highest praise for all of Joe's teachers and everyone involved in his care, past and present. We thank them for their dedication and commitment, but also their patience and calm which was especially needed in those early years.

At college Joe has had the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities and new experiences. As a result he is much more able to cope with new situations and is a lot less anxious in general.

Over the years we have also noticed an increasing independence in Joe. At home he enjoys tasks like loading the washing machine, or cleaning up the kitchen after an evening meal. He is very proud of his work at the Crypt Cafe. We have also noticed that Joe has a greater ability to understand and explain his feelings. He is gradually becoming more assertive and is much more willing to come and talk about what is worrying him.

Joe has a wonderful sense of humour and certainly keeps us amused here at home. The staff at St John's recognise that making people laugh is important to Joe, so they have always encouraged him in this area.

He has a huge enthusiasm for life and for learning. The structured and stimulating environment provided at St John's is just what Joe needs and the caring and nurturing attitude of the staff makes him feel safe and secure. Joe loves college and hates to miss a day. That was obvious in the summer term of 2010, when he struggled on despite experiencing considerable discomfort.

Joe says that he feels sad when he thinks about leaving college next year. He says that he will miss everyone there.

We would like to pay tribute to all the staff at St John's, because without the care, support and back up of everyone, from the receptionists to the senior staff, we would not be looking at such a fine young man today.
