Introduction

The overall quality rating is outstanding. Care Ofsted 2010

St John's is pleased to be able to offer residential placements to young people at the school and college.

The recent refurbishment and registration of our Cornerways house for young adults has enabled us to continue to provide excellent person centred care up to the age of 25.

The Care provision is arranged in 4 small group homes at varying distances from the main campus of the School & College. Each setting houses a group of residents who are supported by a dedicated staff team. Residential, educational and therapeutic staff all work closely together to ensure that each individual's needs can be met within a holistic framework.

The care provision across all our houses was deemed outstanding in our two most recent Ofsted care inspections, something of which we are rightly very proud.

We want the learners to enjoy being resident at St John's and it is our view that fun plays a major part in the building of confidence and self esteem of our young people. Daily events are approached in an informal and enjoyable way to ensure maximum participation.

The whole team share the responsibility for supporting the learners in matters of health & hygiene, planning their care, home contact, meal preparation, handling money, shopping, banking and budgeting.

Care staff receive excellent training with both the college's own nursing team and external practitioners providing relevant and up to date advice and guidance. Care Ofsted 2010

The promotion of a healthy lifestyle is obvious, with information made readily available such as alcohol and drug awareness. Care Ofsted 2010

Residents are encouraged to personalise their bedrooms and living areas and participate in regular house meetings to discuss menu planning, facilities for the house and their views, concerns and wishes. Independent visitors regularly visit the houses to ensure that issues and concerns can be raised with an impartial person, whose sole remit is to act in the best interests of the residents and to advocate on their behalf. An independent consultant is also retained to undertake regular monitoring visits to ensure standards of care remain high and nursing staff monitor the safe storage and administration of prescription and homely medications.

Young people have their privacy respected and are given appropriate responsibility and trust. Staff ensure that young people are allowed their own space and privacy when they wish to have it. Care Ofsted 2010
