Staff support, encourage and guide young people to be a part of the local community and to take appropriate risks and responsibilities. The culture of residential provision aims to equip young people with confidence and a sense of self worth and to avoid practices which may institutionalise them. Care Ofsted 2010 Individual resident’s interests are always considered and they are supported to find out about and attend clubs or groups outside of St John’s such as army cadets, sea cadets, scouts & dance groups. Relaxing at home is also an option of course and key workers ensure that free time is an opportunity to unwind in the house and catch up with family & friends. Understanding and reacting appropriately to a variety of social situations is something that many of our learners find difficult. Offering the opportunity to experience these situations with support from those who understand their individual needs and difficulties enables our young people to build on their confidence and self esteem and to become part of the wider community of Seaford & Brighton.

As well as focusing on skills for living we also ensure that there are a variety of supported social activities for residents to take part in. With the College based in cosmopolitan Brighton, and Seaford affording easy access to the Sussex countryside and nearby Eastbourne, there are plenty of local facilities to meet every interest. Recent planned activities have included bowling, trips to the cinema, swimming, dry slope skiing/snowboarding, football with qualified coaches from Brighton & Hove Seagulls and many more.
