Training & Development

Training and Development at St John's is managed and co-ordinated by the Professional Development Centre. We support, train and develop our own staff and where we can help, external people and organisations.

What we do?

Education Staff

training_developmentWe support continuing professional development for teachers and instructors and encourage all our staff to gain professional teaching qualifications. We have run our own in house City and Guilds PTLLS course, which our Teaching Assistants and Learner Support Workers have the opportunity to undertake. We have also had been able to offer this course to external candidates.

We have also supported a number of support workers to train as Instructors in the Lifelong Learning Sector, sponsoring them to undertake both certificate and diploma level qualifications.

Other training for Education staff takes place on the 5 Inset Days each academic year. We ensure that all mandatory training is undertaken (Fire Safety, Safeguarding etc.) and run training programmes in response to organisational or department specific needs. Recent examples have been supporting our learners to use the Internet safely; ASD Awareness, supporting speech and language in the classroom; teaching sex education and performance management and supervision.

Care Staff

We support all our Care staff to gain their NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care through our in-house NVQ Centre. We can also provide this service to external organisations. Please contact us to discuss your training requirements.

In addition, our Care staff access a comprehensive training programme which takes place regularly on a Friday afternoon. In addition to mandatory training, recent training events have included drug and alcohol awareness, team building, target setting, person centred planning and positive behaviour support.

Medical Therapy

We support all our Therapists and Nursing staff to maintain their professional competence and to keep on top of new developments in their field of expertise. They regularly attend external seminars, special interest groups and professional update courses and share their knowledge with the wider staff teams back at St John's.

Other Staff

All catering, cleaning, maintenance and administrative staff attend training to meet both the mandatory training needs such as COSHH and Health and Safety. Job specific training also takes place, such as NVQs in catering, employment law seminars for HR staff and various electrical and plumbing courses and qualifications and manual handling training for maintenance staff.

Induction

In addition to the above, all new employees attend an Induction course to learn about the main policies and procedures that they will need to be aware of and to meet the key people in the organisation. In addition, all staff attend a two day Team Teach course. Team Teach is the behaviour management approach that is used at St John's and the 2 day course is followed up with regular, shorter refresher training and in response to incidents.
