Residential College Provision

Residential

There are a number of residential packages available at St. John’s College, ranging from 52 week to termly, fornightly or weekly boarding (Monday-Friday), and anything in between.

We have three houses based on the periphery of the college site in Brighton, one house in Hove and a further two houses, along the coast in Peacehaven.

The needs of our college residents range from those who require assistance to carry out basic daily tasks, such as washing and dressing, to those who require less staff support buy may need assistance with essential skills needed for independent living.

All residential groups are arranged based on assessed need and compatibility, rather than ability or disability.

There is a strong emphasis on the ‘waking day’ curriculum, whereby learning  is embedded throughout all aspects of the residential and educational settings. Please click here to see our  Waking Day Curriculum Policy.

All of our learners develop skills, knowledge and understanding within a variety of learning environments and through different learning activities that form the curriculum. Effective teaching and learning enables all learners to progress from their starting points towards the achievement of our five placement outcomes:

  • Wellbeing
  • Communication
  • Skills
  • Independence.
  • Employability

The waking day curriculum prepares all learners for increased independence and fulfilling lives. Community access is a focus for all residents, supporting and enabling them to develop the skills to create and maintain social relationships ,as well as the ability to access and function in modern society.
